Largest fall rowing regatta west of Mississippi brings over 2,500 athletes to Seattle
SEATTLE, Aug. 22, 2007
– The Lake Washington Rowing Club announced on Wednesday
that Seattle’s fall rowing festival - the Head of the
Lake Regatta, will take place Sunday, November 11, 2007.
The 27th annual three-mile regatta, recognized as the largest
fall rowing regatta west of the Mississippi, brings over 2,500
collegiate, masters, high school and national-caliber rowers
to Seattle from throughout the United States and Canada. The
Head of the Lake Regatta stretches along a winding Lake Washington
Ship Canal course from the University of Washington, through
Portage Bay and Lake Union, to the Fremont Bridge.
"In the early years, the Head of the Lake Regatta was
the only west coast answer to the major fall regattas of the
east,” said Sherri Cassuto, a 1984 and 1988 Olympic
rower. “Today, it has matured to become one of the premier
rowing experiences in the nation. It draws not only the finest
crews and scullers of the west coast, but many from the east
coast and abroad as well. It is a fabulous USA rowing opportunity
-not to be missed."
Competitors include local athletes returning home after competition
at the world championships along with athletes from many of
the top rowing colleges in the U.S. and Canada.
“The Head of the Lake Regatta is without doubt the
premiere fall rowing experience on the west coast - an exceptionally
competitive regatta for collegiate, elite, masters and high
school rowers,” said Paul Enquist, Head of the Lake
Founder and 1984 Olympic gold medalist.
