of the Lake Regatta
SEATTLE, Oct. 11, 2007 - The Lake Washington Rowing Club announced
Thursday, that Japan's Shimane University will compete in the
27th annual Head of the Lake Regatta, Sunday, Nov. 11 in Seattle.
Shimane University, located in Matsue City on the western side
of the main Japanese island of Honshu, is the first Asian crew
to participate in Seattle's annual fall regatta. The trip is
organized by Seattle resident Koko Kimura, who moved to Seattle
from Tokyo as a student, and her father Fumio Kimura, president
of the university's rowing association.
"We chose the Head of
the Lake because it is the biggest race on the West Coast of
the United States," said Fumio Kimura. "I want to show the students
Seattle's wonderful rowing environment. We are all looking forward
to attending and enjoying the race."
"We are thrilled to host
a crew from Japan at this year's Head of the Lake Regatta,"
said Ben Porter, Head of the Lake Regatta director. "Seattle
has a long history in welcoming athletes and teams from Japan
among its athletic community. Shimane University's visit to
Seattle will help continue this tradition as well as add a strong
international team to the open eight-oared event at the Head
of the Lake Regatta."
With 2,500 rowers expected to compete
in elite, collegiate, high school and masters events, the Head
of the Lake Regatta is recognized as the largest fall rowing
regatta west of the Mississippi River. The regatta stretches
