Head of the Lake began in 1979 when a small group of Lake Washington Rowing Club scullers raced each other at the end of the season, joined by University of Washington athletes seeking fall competition. From these humble beginnings, the regatta became an annual tradition.

Over the years, collegiate, Masters and junior rowers from across the U.S. and Canada have competed. Today, Head of the Lake is the premiere fall regatta in the Pacific Northwest, featuring a beautiful and challenging course from Lake Union to Lake Washington, with the Seattle skyline and Cascade Mountains as a backdrop.

With its combination of stunning scenery, technical demands, and top-level competition, Head of the Lake continues to be a highlight of the fall rowing season, drawing athletes eager to test their skill and endurance.
